J P Kirana & General Store is over at Ramgad Mode in Jaipur, near Chawand Ka Mand. It’s a local place where we sell the usual things like flour, oil, and spices. Most of our customers live in the houses nearby and they have been coming here for a long time. I start the day early to open up before the sun gets too hot. Jaipur can be very dry and dusty, so I have to wipe down the counter many times. We have jars of sweets for the kids and big sacks of grains for the grown-ups. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to use a torch to find things on the back shelves. It’s not a fancy shop with air conditioning or glass doors. It’s just an open front where people can stop their bikes and grab a packet of salt or some matches. I keep a ledger for the people who pay at the end of the month, though I prefer cash when I can get it. There are many stories in this neighborhood and I hear most of them across this counter. We don't have a big team, just me and my brother taking turns. We try to keep things organized but it gets messy when we are busy. It’s a small business and we just do our best to stay stocked up for the local families.
