If you walk down Bapat Road in Indore, you will find Shiv Clay Shop sitting right opposite the Brilliant Hotel. We deal mostly in items made of clay, things like pots for plants, water pitchers, and small decorative pieces. The shop has that earthy smell of wet clay, which I personally like quite a lot. It is a simple place with rows of items stacked on the ground and on wooden racks. Being across from a big hotel means we see a lot of different people passing by, though most of our regulars are folks from the nearby colonies looking for a new Matka in the summer. During festivals, we get busy with diyas and idols. The road outside stays pretty busy, and sometimes the dust settles on the pots, so we have to wipe them down often. We don't use any big machines; it’s mostly just handling the goods and making sure they don’t break. Clay is fragile, so you have to be careful when moving things around. The shop isn't very big, but it serves the purpose. We stay open until late evening when the streetlights come on. People often stop their scooters right in front to pick something up quickly. It’s a quiet kind of work, just dealing with mud and fire and customers who want something natural for their homes. We don't have a website, just the shop on the road. We’ve been here for a while.
