About Sai Handicraft Industries – Art & Craft in Indore
The workshop is right near the cement godown on Pathar Mundla Road. It gets a bit dusty around here because of all the trucks passing by to drop off building materials, but inside we are usually busy with wood and fabric. Sai Handicraft Industries started because we just liked making things with our hands. It isn’t a fancy place with air conditioning or glass windows. We have some old benches and tools that have been around for years. Most days, you’ll find two or three of us sitting on the floor or at the tall tables trying to get the details right on a new piece. We don't really have a big showroom. People just walk in from the road when they see the sign. Sometimes the power goes out in the afternoon, so we just sit outside and wait for it to come back on. The tea stall down the street brings us chai around four o’clock, which is the highlight of the day. We make all sorts of items, mostly things people use in their homes or give as gifts. It is hard work and our hands are always dirty with paint or sawdust by the time we close up. The address is easy to find if you know where the Mundla road crossing is. We don't have a big marketing team or anything like that. It is just us here making stuff and trying to keep the place tidy. Every evening we sweep up the floor and lock the heavy metal shutters before heading home.
