Sri Matha Ladies Fashion Tailors is tucked away in Sangeeth Nagar within the Kukatpally area. If you live around here, you know how busy Kukatpally can get with all the new buildings and people moving in. My shop is usually filled with the sound of sewing machines whirring. I have a couple of people helping me with the stitching because the orders pile up pretty fast, especially when there’s a festival coming up. The floor is almost always covered in tiny thread bits and scraps of silk or cotton that we’ve cut away. I try to sweep it twice a day but it’s a losing battle. We have a big wooden table where I do the marking and cutting with my old heavy scissors. The chalk marks on the fabric are all over the place. Customers bring in their own materials and we just figure out the measurements. It’s not a fancy boutique with air conditioning or anything like that. We just have a few stools for people to sit on while they explain what they want. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait a bit, but that’s just how it is in Sangeeth Nagar. I’ve got stacks of notebooks where I keep everyone’s measurements written down by hand. It’s a lot of work but it’s what we do here every day from ten in the morning until late at night when the eyes get tired.
