If you come by Hno 3-83/1/2/B/G-2 in Nizampet, you’ll find us surrounded by piles of fabric and bits of thread. Anu'S Fashion Designer is a small spot near Eshwar Vilas where there is always the sound of sewing machines running. It gets really crowded in here right before the big festivals because everyone wants their clothes finished at the same time. I usually have a measuring tape around my neck and a few pins stuck in my pincushion. It’s not like those fancy boutiques you see in the big malls. We have sketches taped to the walls and scrap fabric all over the floor by the end of the day. Sometimes a customer comes in with a vague idea and we have to spend a long time figuring out how to make it work. My eyes get tired from looking at the small stitches, especially when the light isn’t great in the evening. We talk to the ladies from the neighborhood while they try on their dresses, and there’s always some gossip or news to share. It’s a busy little place, and sometimes the power goes out, so we have to wait around or use the old manual machines. It’s just regular work, trying to make things look nice for people. We don’t have much space, but we make it work with what we have here in Hyderabad. It is mostly just needles, thread, and a lot of patience.
