We operate out of the Merchant Association Building on Neeligin Road. It’s a busy part of town with a lot of commercial traffic and people moving about. Our office is usually filled with stacks of parcels and envelopes waiting to be sorted. There’s always the sound of packing tape being pulled and boxes being moved around. It’s not the most organized-looking place, but we have a system that works for us. We spend a lot of time checking addresses and writing out manifests by hand. The drivers are always coming and going, complaining about the heavy traffic or the rain slowing them down. We just listen and keep moving the packages. The building itself is old, so the elevators are slow and the corridors are a bit dark and narrow. We have a small desk near the front for when people want to drop things off. Sometimes the phone rings non-stop with people asking where their stuff is, and other times it’s dead quiet for an hour. We drink coffee from the stall downstairs to keep ourselves going throughout the day. It’s a lot of physical work, lifting heavy crates and shifting things from one pile to another. We don’t have any fancy tracking screens on the walls, just some old clipboards and a computer that’s seen better days. We do the work, get the stuff where it needs to go, and then start all over again the next morning. It’s just a regular job for regular people.
