Our yard is out on Karwar Road, right next to the big electric grid. You can’t miss the humming sound from the transformers when it’s quiet at night. Working with granite is heavy work. We spend most of the day moving slabs around with the crane. It’s noisy and there is always a layer of stone dust on everything, no matter how much we sweep. We started out small and just stayed at this spot because it has enough space for the trucks to turn around. The road out here gets pretty muddy when it rains, which makes moving the stones a bit tricky. We have to be careful not to slip. Most of the guys here have been working with stone for a long time. Their hands are rough, but they know how to handle the material. We don't have a fancy showroom. If you come by, you’ll just see us in our work clothes, probably covered in some grey grit. We get the blocks in, cut them down, and get them ready for whoever needs them. It’s a lot of lifting and measuring. Sometimes the power goes out, maybe because we’re so close to the grid, but we just wait it out. It’s not a fast-paced life, but it’s steady. We just take one slab at a time and make sure it doesn't crack. It’s hard work, but we’re used to the heavy lifting by now. It keeps us fit.
