Safar

Safar is located right in the middle of Baksara, specifically on Brojonath Lahiri Lane. Most people around here just call the area Bombay Tailors Gully because there are so many of us doing similar work in these narrow streets. It is the kind of place where everyone knows everyone else’s business. If you are looking for us, you have to watch out for the bikes zooming past because the lane is quite thin. We have been in this spot for a while now, just doing our daily tasks with the fabric and the machines. It gets quite noisy during the day with all the chatter from the other shops and the sound of the sewing. We do not have a big showroom or anything like that. It is just a practical space where the work happens. Sometimes the monsoon rains make the gully a bit messy, but we manage to keep the stock dry. The shop is small, but it fits what we need. We drink a lot of tea from the stall at the corner while we talk about the day’s work. There is no corporate structure here, just us trying to make a living and getting the garments ready for whoever needs them. It is a busy life in Baksara, but we are used to the rhythm of the gully by now and we just keep the machines going.
