Down in Howrah, on Ramlal Mukherjee Lane, you’ll find A.P.Fashions Pvt Ltd. It’s a narrow street that is usually full of people moving goods back and forth. Our building is right in the thick of it. Inside, it’s a bit of a maze with different rooms for fabric storage and sewing. There is always the sound of machines running somewhere in the background, and the air is often filled with bits of thread and the scent of new cloth. We don’t have a big fancy showroom with bright lights. Most of our space is dedicated to the actual work of making clothes and managing the logistics of shipping them out to different places. The desks in the office area are piled high with samples and order forms. It’s a messy, busy place where things are always moving. We have a small staff of people who have been working in the garment trade for most of their lives. We don’t spend time on big corporate meetings or branding exercises. We just look at the orders, check the quality of the stitching, and try to get everything out the door on time. The traffic in Howrah can be a real headache, so getting deliveries in and out is always a bit of a challenge for the drivers.
