sankar nursery

sankar nursery is out in Serampore, at a place called Harihar Nursery. It’s a lot different from the busy industrial areas in the city. Here, we deal with dirt, water, and plants all day long. It’s a bit of a walk to get out here, but it’s nice and quiet once you arrive and see the green. We have rows and rows of saplings and flowers sitting in plastic bags or clay pots. Our clothes are usually stained with mud, especially after we’ve been watering everything in the early morning. Serampore has a lot of green, and we like being a part of that. We don't have a big office or a computer to track everything we grow. We mostly just know where everything is by looking at the rows. Sometimes the birds get into the seeds, and we have to shoo them away or cover the pots. It's a simple life. We sell to people who want a bit of color in their gardens or farmers looking for new trees for their land. We don't use any fancy marketing tricks or big slogans. We just show you the plants and tell you how much water they need to stay alive. The weather is our biggest boss. If it rains too much, the nursery gets very muddy. If it’s too hot, we spend all day with the hose. It's honest work and we like being outside in the fresh air instead of a factory.
