Out here in Rabindranagar, things move at their own pace. M.L. Dalmiya & Co. Ltd. has been part of the landscape in this bit of Hooghly for a good while. We are situated in Vill-2No, not far from the post office. It’s a typical West Bengal setting where the roads can be narrow and the trees are thick. We don't have a big fancy office with air conditioning in every corner. It is a working site. Most of the people here have been with us for years. They know the Chinsurah area well. We handle various projects, mostly dealing with the kind of work that gets your hands dirty. It’s not a glamorous life, but it is honest. When the monsoon hits, the ground gets soft and we have to adjust, but that's just how it is in the district. We don't do much advertising. Most people find us because they know the name or they’ve seen us around. We keep our records in big ledgers and spend a lot of time on the phone or talking to people who drop by. It’s about getting the day's work finished so we can start again tomorrow. There’s no corporate ladder to climb here. We just work together and try to stay on top of the tasks we’ve been given. We don't complicate things more than we need to. It is just the way we like to operate.
