Down at House No.11 on By Lane No.1 in Usha Nagar, things stay pretty busy for us at Assam Tea Brokers Pvt. Ltd. Being in Dispur, we’re right in the heart of things, but our specific lane is actually tucked away enough that you don’t get all the main road noise. The house we work out of is a regular building that we’ve converted into our office space. It’s got a bit of a garden out front that we don't always have time to look after. Inside, it’s all business. We have rooms filled with small tins of tea samples that come in from the gardens every week. Our job as brokers means we’re constantly on the phone or tasting different brews to see what’s what. It’s not a glamorous life; there’s a lot of spitting into buckets and arguing over prices. The kitchen is always running with the kettle going for the next round of tastings. We have old maps of the tea estates pinned to the walls and stacks of papers that never seem to get smaller. Sometimes the monsoon rains make the roof leak a little in the corner, so we have to move the desks around. It’s just part of being in an older house in Assam. We don’t have a fancy corporate lobby or a receptionist. If the door is open, you just walk in and find us in the back.
