Our shop is right on Hapur Road, sitting just opposite the gurduwara. You can’t miss it because of all the metal scrap and finished parts piled up near the entrance. The sound of the prayers from across the road often mixes with the clanging of our hammers and the hum of the lathes. It’s a busy stretch of road, so there is always a lot of dust and traffic noise passing by. We started this engineering work with just a couple of old machines and a lot of manual labor. Now we have a bit more equipment, but the way we work hasn't changed much. We take on all sorts of mechanical jobs, from small repairs to making bigger components for other factories. The floor is usually covered in metal shavings, and we have to sweep it out every evening before we lock up. It’s a hot place in the summer, and the fans don't do much more than move the warm air around. Most of the guys here have been working with their hands since they were teenagers, so they have a lot of practical experience that you can't get from a book. We don't spend much on advertising or anything like that; people usually just find us because they saw the sign on the road or heard about us from a neighbor. We just try to do honest work and keep the machines running for everyone who comes in.
