Our place is at B-33 in the Industrial Estate. It’s one of those long rows of units where everyone is making something different. We do engineering work here, mostly focusing on metal parts and small assemblies. The building is a simple concrete structure with high ceilings and a big sliding door that we leave open for the breeze. It gets really hot during the day, especially when the machines have been running for hours. We don’t have any fancy office staff. We just have a few guys who know how to handle the equipment. Most of our time is spent looking at blueprints or checking the measurements on a piece of steel. It’s not the kind of job where you wear a suit. We wear heavy boots and work clothes that can take a bit of a beating. Lunchtime is usually spent sitting on some crates outside the front door, watching the delivery trucks go by. It’s a quiet life in a way, even with all the noise of the machines. We’ve been in this spot for several years now and we know most of the other shop owners on this block. We don’t go looking for trouble or big fame. We just want to finish the day’s work and make sure the parts are done right. The floor is always a bit dusty, and there is always a project waiting on the bench when we arrive in the morning.
