Being at the Ghaziabad Civil Court Compound is quite an experience every day. Our spot is number 328. It is always noisy here with the sound of lawyers, clerks, and people looking for help. Khem Singh has been working out of this small office for many years now. There is no air conditioning, so we just rely on the breeze when there is one. The shelves are packed with files and old registers. It looks a bit messy to an outsider, but we know where everything is kept. We don't have a big team or a receptionist to greet you. Usually, we are just hunched over the desks dealing with the paperwork. The tea seller comes by every few hours, and that’s when we take a short break. It is hard work and the days are long, but this is the life we know. People come to us with all sorts of things, and we just listen and do what we can. The courtyard gets very muddy when it rains, so we have to be careful with the documents. We aren't trying to be a big firm or anything. We just stay here at 328 and get through the pile of work on the desk. It’s a basic setup for basic work. Sometimes the chai wala brings us a glass of tea without us even asking. He knows our schedule better than we do. We don't use any fancy talk, just plain English.
