Modern Cemento Bricks

Modern Cemento Bricks is located in Aira Puram, over in Terumdavoor. It is mostly an outdoor operation because of the way we make the bricks. We have the mixers going early in the morning, and the smell of wet cement is just part of the air here. It’s a dusty job, and our clothes usually show it by lunchtime. We stack the bricks in long rows to let them dry out. It takes time and you can't really rush it. People around here know us for being steady. We don't have a big marketing department or anything like that. If you need bricks, you just come down to the yard and talk to whoever is near the gate. We’ve got different sizes and types, depending on what kind of wall or building someone is putting up. The weather is the biggest factor in our day; if it’s too rainy, everything slows down. We’re just a group of local people making something useful for the community. You can hear the machines from a distance. It's not a complicated business, but it requires a lot of manual labor and keeping an eye on the consistency of the mix. We’ve been at this spot for a while, and the piles of bricks just keep moving out and being replaced by new ones. It’s a cycle that keeps us busy from Monday to Saturday without much of a break except for lunch.
