Up here at N-20 in the Shiv Ganga Apartment, things are usually pretty quiet. We are tucked away behind Bal Vihar in the Sonari area of Jamshedpur. It’s a residential part of town, so you don’t get as much of the heavy industrial noise as you might elsewhere. The apartment itself is a bit older, with those standard Jamshedpur balcony designs. We use the space for Tata Steel Ltd business, but it feels like a regular flat mostly. There’s a small grocery shop just down the road where we grab snacks. The walls inside could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but they hold up fine for what we do. We have a few computers and some old metal cupboards for all the files. Most of the people who work here live nearby, so we just walk or take a scooty to the office. It gets hot in the afternoons, and the ceiling fans hum constantly. Sometimes the power goes out for a bit, but we just wait it out. It’s not a flashy place with a big neon sign. In fact, if you didn’t know the address, you might just walk right past us. We handle the paperwork and keep things moving. There is a sense of community in Sonari that you don’t always find in the bigger office blocks. It’s just us doing our bit in 831011, day in and day out.
