Smit is a special place in the East Khasi Hills, and that is where Joint Seng Nongrep Agrofed Farmers' Producer Company Limited comes from. We work out of Dienglieng and use Nowis Mynsong’s house as our contact point. Farming here is something that runs in the blood. We’ve all been doing it since we were small. The idea for the company came about because we saw that other places were getting organized and we didn't want to get left behind. We produce all sorts of things depending on the time of year. Kharang and Smit have good land, but it takes a lot of effort to keep it going. We are a simple group. We don't spend money on fancy advertisements or shiny things. Most of our time is spent in the fields or trying to figure out how to get our stuff to the city without too much trouble. It is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle sometimes. You have to think about the seeds, the manure, and then the selling part at the end. We just try to support each other. If one farmer has a bad year, the rest of us try to balance it out. It’s just the way things should be done among neighbors. We aren't doing anything revolutionary, just trying to survive and do okay for our families. The traditions in Smit are very old and we try to respect that while we use this company structure.
