At 33, Rani Meyyammai Nagar in Karikali, you’ll find us working at Chettinad Cement Corporation Ltd. It’s a sprawling site, and it takes a while just to walk from one end to the other. There is always a layer of fine dust on everything, no matter how much we clean. It’s just the nature of working with cement. The sun can be quite harsh out here in Karikali, so we try to get the heavy outdoor work done as early as possible. Our office space is pretty basic, with metal desks and some old maps of the area pinned to the walls. We have a lot of trucks coming in and out, so there is a constant rumble of engines in the background. It’s not the quietest place to spend your day, but you get used to it after a while. Most of us wear heavy boots and hard hats, which can be a bit uncomfortable when the temperature rises. We don't have a lot of visitors, mostly just drivers and technicians. There isn't any fancy lobby with magazines; it’s just a place where work happens. We focus on the daily numbers and making sure the machinery stays in good shape. It’s a tough, practical environment, and the people here are just as straightforward. We do our jobs, look out for each other, and head home when the work is finished.
