Gurukul School

If you drive down Maheshwar Road in Dhamnod, you’ll find us easily enough. We’re right there in the Dhar district, and it’s a fairly quiet part of town compared to the bigger cities. The sun hits the front of the school early in the morning, and that’s when we all start arriving. We don’t have any of those high-tech gadgets you see in movies, just standard desks and blackboards that need a good wipe-down every evening. The local kids walk over from the nearby houses, and you can see them coming from a distance. Sometimes a stray dog wanders into the yard, and we have to shoo it out before the kids get distracted. Our garden has a few trees that provide some shade, which is nice when it’s middle of the afternoon and the heat is sitting heavy. We keep our records in old cupboards that creak every time you open them. The teachers here have been around for years, so everyone knows each other’s business. It’s a small community, really. We talk about the weather or the local crops while we wait for the school bus to get back. There’s always a bit of mud on the floor during the monsoon, and we just mop it up and keep going. It’s a simple life here at the school, and we like it that way.
