Finding 4820 21 Phatak Namak in Hauz Qazi is a bit of a challenge if you aren't from around here. This part of Delhi is crowded and the lanes are very narrow. Mckinsey Company has its space right in the middle of all that bustle. It’s an old building, the kind with thick walls and steep stairs. We spend our days surrounded by the sounds of the market and people shouting instructions. It’s loud, but it has a rhythm we’ve grown to like. Our office isn't much to look at, just some sturdy tables and shelves full of folders. We do our work here because it’s where we’ve always been. The light isn't great, so we keep the lamps on even during the day. Sometimes the power cuts out and we just sit and talk until the generator kicks in. It’s not a corporate glass tower, that’s for sure. We use the local rickshaws to get around because cars don't really fit in the Phatak. There’s a lot of history in these walls, even if it’s just dust and old paint now. We stay busy with the daily grind. It’s a lot of manual sorting and keeping track of things. We know the neighbors well; the guy selling spices next door always says hello. It’s just how things are in Hauz Qazi. We do what we need to do. It’s a hard-working atmosphere without any of the extra polish you see in newer areas.
