If you know Kashmere Gate, you know how hectic the traffic gets, especially in the afternoons when all the delivery trucks are trying to move. Our shop is tucked away there, filled with boxes of different parts used for fluid transmission. It’s a bit cramped inside because we try to keep a lot of stock on hand. We spend most of our mornings unloading crates and checking what arrived from the previous day. It’s not a quiet place to work, with all the horns honking outside, but we’ve gotten used to it over the years. Working here means knowing your way around a catalog and being able to spot the difference between two very similar-looking valves. We close up when the sun goes down and the market starts to quiet a bit. It’s a simple operation, run by a handful of us who’ve been in the trade for a while. We drink a lot of chai to keep going through the busy hours. My desk is usually covered in receipts and half-empty cups.
