In Katwaria Sarai, things are always a bit cramped and busy. We are in Room No 14 at F 27, which is the Surat Singh building. If you’ve spent any time in this part of New Delhi 16, you know how the lanes are. Our office is right in the middle of it all. We get a lot of students from the nearby institutes and people living in the small apartments around here. The space is small and we’ve had to organize the desks just right to make everyone fit. It’s not the kind of place where you’ll find marble floors. We have a few old wooden chairs for people waiting. Most of the time, the air is filled with the sound of scooters zooming past outside. We handle a lot of basic accounts and student stuff. Sometimes the paperwork gets a bit messy on a busy Friday. Our staff is used to the local chaos. We don’t have a big sign outside that lights up, just a regular spot where people know to find us. We talk to people in plain Hindi or English, whatever they are comfortable with. It’s a very local feel. If the tea is late, we all notice. We aren't here to make things sound better than they are. It’s a tough, fast-paced neighborhood and we just keep the books straight and the cash moving for whoever comes in.
