Working right on the Tis Hazari Main Road at B 5 means there is never a quiet moment. Between the buses roaring past and the people shouting for rickshaws, it’s a constant wall of noise. I’ve been in this office for a while, and my desk is tucked away in a corner where I can see the street. I handle a lot of different things, mostly involving a lot of folders and rubber stamps. It’s the kind of work that requires patience, which I’ve had to learn over the years. My walls are lined with shelves that are sagging a bit under the weight of all the records I keep. I don’t like throwing anything away because you never know when someone will come back asking for a document from five years ago. I drink a lot of coffee to stay sharp through the long afternoons. The building is old and the corridors are narrow, but it has a certain character that you don't find in the new glass buildings. I know the other shop owners on the ground floor, and we usually exchange a nod or a quick word about the weather or the traffic. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s steady and it’s right in the heart of the action. I keep the door open so I don’t feel too boxed in by all the paper stacks. I just keep going.
