Satish Kumar & Sons

Our place is tucked away in Pahari Gali in Kalyanpur. Satish Kumar & Sons has been the name on the board for a generation. My father started it and now I handle the daily work with my own sons helping out when they can. The alley is quite narrow, so we don’t get many cars, mostly just people on foot or cycles. It gets a bit dark in the shop because the buildings around us are so tall, but we have enough lights to see the stock. We sell a variety of things, mostly hardware and some household items. It’s a bit of a mess sometimes with boxes stacked in the corners. I know exactly where everything is, even if it doesn't look like it to a stranger. We don't use any modern inventory systems. I just look at the shelves and know what to order next week. Customers come to us because they know we’ve been here forever. We aren't trying to expand or become a big chain. We just want to keep the shop running like it always has. It’s a bit of a struggle when the rains come and the lane gets flooded, but we manage to stay dry. It’s just an old-fashioned family business. We take things one day at a time and treat everyone who walks in like a neighbor.
