Out here at No. 6/15 Main Road, things start moving pretty early in the morning. Being in Pappampatti, just past the Ondipudur turn, we get used to the sounds of the road and the birds waking up way before most people are even thinking about breakfast. It’s a poultry farm, so there is always something that needs doing, whether it is checking the water lines or making sure the feed is distributed right. It isn't a quiet place, that is for sure. You can hear the hens from the gate. We have a small crew and most of us have been around for years, so we don't really need to tell each other what to do anymore. The office is just a simple room with a few filing cabinets and a fan that clicks a bit when it's on high. It gets hot under the roof in the afternoon, but we manage with plenty of tea breaks. People drive by on their way to the city and probably don't think much of the buildings, but there is a lot of activity behind the fences. We handle the daily routine of the farm without much fuss. It is just life for us. We deal with the weather, the supply trucks coming in, and the constant cycle of the birds growing. It is honest work and it keeps us on our feet from sunrise until we lock up the gates at night.
