We’re over at No. 27/28 on Perur Main Road in Selvapuram. The workshop sits right on the main stretch, so it’s easy to find but can get pretty noisy with the buses passing by. We have a fairly large open area where we keep the heavy equipment. The floor is stained with oil from years of work, and we don't bother trying to scrub it out anymore. It gives the place character. Most of the day is spent with tools in hand. We have a small partitioned area that serves as an office, but we’re rarely sitting in there. It’s mostly for keeping the invoices from blowing away in the wind. The roof is made of corrugated sheets, so when it rains, you can’t hear yourself think. We just keep working through it. We’ve got a couple of old wooden benches out front where we sit and talk to the neighbors sometimes. Everyone around here knows us. We don't use any high-tech gadgets for our daily tasks. We rely on the stuff we’ve used for decades. It works for us. It’s a straightforward way of living. We show up, work on the projects that came in, and make sure the gates are locked tight before we head off. It gets dark early on this street, so we usually wrap things up by six. There is a small shrine just past the entrance where we light a lamp every evening.
