Our shop is right on the 100 Feet Road in Tharamani, just across from the CSI Church. If you’re driving by Thanthai Periyar Nagar, you can usually smell the fresh cut wood coming from our place at No 1-A. We’ve got piles of timber and half-finished chairs all over the place. It’s not the most organized shop, but we know where everything is. People come in from the neighborhood asking for custom tables or just to get an old cupboard fixed. Kennady Street gets pretty busy, so there’s always a lot of noise from the bikes and buses. We’ve got sawdust in our hair and on our clothes most days. It’s a family-run kind of thing, so you might see someone’s kid running around or a relative sitting in the back having tea. We don’t have a big website or anything fancy like that. We just build furniture that stays together. Some of the tools we use are pretty old, passed down from when we first started. The floor is made of concrete and it’s always got some stain from the polish we use. When the sun hits the street in the evening, it gets really bright in the front of the shop. We usually close up late once the last customer leaves. It’s just how we do things here in Chennai. It is hard work but we enjoy seeing what we make.
