We have been here on Judge Jambulingam Road for quite a while now. Most mornings start pretty early for us because the dough needs time to sit. It gets busy in Mylapore especially when people are headed to work or stopping by after a temple visit. Bread and Beyond isn't a fancy place with lots of mirrors or anything. It's just where we bake what we know. Sometimes the oven acts up but we manage to get things out on the racks before the first rush. You can usually smell the yeast from the street if the wind is blowing right. My father used to say that a bakery is the heart of a street, and we try to keep that going. We spend a lot of time cleaning up flour from the corners. It's dusty work but someone has to do it. The shop at number 23 is small, but it fits what we need. We see the same faces every day, which is nice. People come in to complain about the heat or talk about the traffic on the way to the office. We just listen and wrap up their orders. There’s no big secret to what we do here. We just show up, mix the ingredients, and hope the bread turns out soft every single time. It's a living and we like being part of the neighborhood. The sidewalk outside is always a bit cracked, but people still find their way to us for their morning rolls.
