Ship Breaking Industries

We spend most days down here at C/150, Kpes School Road. If you know Kaliyabid in Bhavnagar, you know the area is busy. Ship Breaking Industries isn't a fancy name, but it says what we do. We take these massive vessels apart piece by piece. It's loud and dirty work, to be honest. Gujarat has a long history with this kind of stuff, and we’re just a part of that. My father worked around here too. Sometimes the tide is high and things get messy. We have a crew that’s been here for years. They know how to handle the steel. You won't find a glossy office here. Just the yard and a lot of metal. We deal with the scrap and the leftover parts. People come by looking for specific bits of hardware. It’s a lot of manual labor. The sun gets hot in Bhavnagar, especially in the afternoons. We just keep our heads down and get through the stack of work. Sometimes the ships are old cargo ones, other times they are smaller. We don't really care as long as there is work to do. It’s just how things go in this part of town. If you walk past the school road, you’ll probably hear the sound of the torches. We aren't doing anything world-changing, just breaking down what's left of these boats so the metal can go somewhere else. It's a living. We've been at this spot for quite a while now.
