Lucrative Garments

The workshop is right in the middle of Rc Village in Nayapally. It’s a busy little spot. You can usually hear the sound of the sewing machines before you even get to the door. We have racks of clothes all over the place. Sometimes it’s hard to walk through the aisles because of the bags of fabric waiting to be cut. We started here because the rent was okay and it’s close to where most of us live. The light in the morning is good for seeing the stitches clearly. We don’t use a lot of big machines, just the standard ones that get the job done. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to sit and wait, which gives us a chance to talk about our families or what’s for lunch. Most of the people around Nayapally know us by now. We aren't making anything for the big runways, just regular garments for people to wear. The floor is usually covered in thread and small scraps of cloth. We sweep it up every evening before we head out. It gets hot in the summer, so we keep the big doors open to let the breeze in. It’s a noisy, busy place but we like it that way. Every piece we finish goes onto the stack near the entrance. It’s just us and the fabric, day in and day out, trying to get orders finished.
