Mandideep is known for its factories, and right in the middle of all that is our school. Being out here in the 462046 area of Bhopal means we get a lot of students whose parents work in the industrial zone. The air can be a bit heavy with the smell of the nearby plants, but we are used to it. The school building stands out because it’s a bit taller than the shops around it. We have several floors and lots of stairs, which keeps us tired. The mornings are usually a rush of people coming from the city and the local villages. We don’t have fancy carpets or modern art; it’s just plain walls and sturdy wooden desks. The playground is a bit gravelly, so the kids often come back with scraped knees. We keep a first aid kit handy for that. Our teachers are mostly focused on getting the lessons finished before the final bell. Sometimes we have to deal with water shortages, which is common in this part of town. We just manage with what we have. It’s a straightforward place where people come to learn and we come to work. There isn’t much drama, just the daily grind of a school in an industrial town.
