Viswa Silks

We are located in the industrial area of Bommanahalli, specifically in units 3 and 4. It is right near the Oxford College of Engineering, so we see a lot of students walking by on their way to Hosur Road. The area is always noisy with the sounds of trucks and other factories. We work with silk, and the machines we use are quite old but they still do the job. The floor is constantly covered in tiny threads and bits of fabric that we have to sweep up every evening. It gets very hot inside during the summer because the roof is just metal sheets. We don’t have air conditioning, just a couple of big fans that move the dust around. My family has been doing this for years, and I just took over. It is honest work, even if it is tiring on the back and the eyes. We spend most of our time checking the quality of the weave. Sometimes the silk comes in and it isn't quite right, so we have to sort through it by hand. It takes a long time and my eyes get tired. We aren't a big corporation or anything like that. We just have these two units where we keep the looms going from morning until the sun goes down. The road outside is always under some kind of repair, so it's a bit of a mess to get here most days.
