We are up here on the second floor of number fifty-seven on Commercial Street. It gets pretty loud outside with all the shoppers and traffic, but inside it stays mostly quiet. We’ve been here a while now. Most days start with opening the windows to get some air in before the sun gets too high. There is a lot of paperwork on the desks and sometimes the tea gets cold before anyone has a chance to drink it. People come up the stairs looking for help with their legal matters. We do not have fancy furniture or anything like that. Just some chairs, old desks, and bookshelves full of binders. It is a bit cramped when more than a few people are here at once. Sometimes the ceiling fan makes a clicking noise that we should probably get fixed, but we just got used to it. Working on Commercial Street means you never really get a dull moment, even if you are tucked away on the second floor. We just try to get through the files one by one. It is a job like any other, keeping things organized and making sure the documents are filed right. You can hear the car horns from the street below all afternoon. It is just us doing what we do every day. Nothing flashy about it, really. The stairs are steep and the hallway is a bit narrow, but we manage just fine in this space.
