Suman Silks is right across from Sudharshan Silks in Chickpet. If you’ve been to 710, you know it’s a competitive spot. There are so many silk shops around here, you’d think there was enough for the whole world. We just try to focus on our own corner. The shop is often crowded, especially during the wedding seasons when everyone is looking for something special. We have piles of sarees and materials that sometimes reach the ceiling. It’s a bit of a maze inside. We don't use any fancy computer systems to track everything; we mostly just know where things are because we put them there ourselves. Sometimes we lose a specific color for a minute, but we always find it eventually. The noise from the street is constant, with people shouting and horns honking. It becomes like background noise after a while. We stay open late most nights because that’s when people have time to shop. My hands are usually a bit stained from some of the dyes, but that’s just part of the job. We aren’t trying to be some big brand name. We are just Suman Silks, and we’ve been standing on this floor for a lot of years. We just keep the doors open and try to be helpful to whoever walks through them. It gets hot in here when the fans aren't working right, but we manage just fine.
