I operate out of a small space at 30/1 Killari Road. My office is on the first floor, right by the 24th Cross. If you know Killari Road, you know it is one of the most crowded and hectic places in the city. There are people selling everything from textiles to electronics right on the street. Getting up to my office requires navigating a narrow staircase, but once you are inside, it’s a bit of a refuge from the chaos below. I have been in this location for many years, handling trade documents and helping other merchants with their accounts. My desk is always covered in stacks of receipts and ledgers. I don't use a computer for everything; I still like to write things down in my big books. The room is small and gets quite warm in the afternoon, so the ceiling fan is always running at full speed. I know almost all the other shopkeepers on this block. We often shout to each other from the windows or meet up for a quick tea at the corner. It is a very traditional way of working where a person’s word is more important than a long contract. I don't have a fancy reception area or any soft chairs. People just come in, state their business, and we get to work. It is a fast-paced environment that keeps me on my toes every single day.
