Shayam Silk

Nagarathpet is always crowded, no matter what time of day you decide to visit. Our shop, Shayam Silk, is tucked away on the 1st floor at number 53, right near the Avenue Road cross. You have to walk up some narrow stairs to find us, but most of our regular customers know the way by heart now. It is a bit of a squeeze when we get new stock in, with boxes everywhere and fabrics piled up on the counters. We have been in this spot for years, dealing with all kinds of silk materials and talking to people from all over the city. The noise from the street downstairs never really stops, but you just get used to it after a while. We do not have those big fancy windows like the shops you see in the malls. It is more about the shelves full of stock and the smell of fresh fabric in the air. Most days it is just us folding things back up after customers leave to keep the place somewhat neat. The lighting in the shop isn't perfect, but it works well enough for showing off the colors of the sarees. We know most of the other shopkeepers around here. We trade stories about the market and the weather while we wait for the next person to walk in. It is a lived-in space, nothing is brand new, but everything has its place.
