Our shop, Next Fashion Apparels Bengaluru, is right by the Mahalakshmi Layout last bus stop. It’s a convenient spot because the buses are always coming and going, so there’s always people around. We’ve been here for a while, working on different kinds of clothing. The shop is usually a bit of a mess with threads and patterns lying on the tables, but we know where everything is. We don’t have a big corporate office or anything like that. It’s just the workspace where we spend our days. Some of us have been working together for years now, so we have a good rhythm. We don’t talk much while we work, just listen to the radio and keep the needles moving. It’s not the most glamorous job, but it keeps us busy. We see the commuters waiting for the bus outside our window every day. Sometimes they peek in to see what we are making. We don’t have any fancy mission statements or marketing slogans. We just make clothes and try to do a decent job of it. When the weather is nice, we leave the door open to get a breeze. Mahalakshmi Layout is a good place to be, and being at the last stop means everyone knows where we are. We just keep doing our thing, day in and day out, at our own pace until the work is done.
