Mehta Hi Fashion is located at 80 Dk Lane, right in the middle of Netkallappa Market on Avenue Road. This is Chickpet Cross, so it’s one of the busiest spots you can imagine. The lanes are so narrow that two people can barely walk side by side when the carts are coming through. Our shop is old and the walls are thick. We have rolls of cloth stacked from the floor to the ceiling. It’s a bit dark inside, but we have bright tube lights so customers can see the colors properly. There’s always the sound of people bargaining outside and the bells of the temple nearby. We sit on the floor mostly, or on low stools, dealing with the wholesalers and the walk-ins. It gets very hot in the summer, so we have these old metal fans that rattle on the ceiling. We’ve been in Chickpet for a long time, so we know all the other shopkeepers around. It’s a tight community. You won't find any fancy displays here. We just pull down the fabric you want to see and spread it out on the white sheets on the floor. It’s honest work and long days. We open up early and usually stay until the last customer leaves, even if the sun went down hours ago. The smell of incense and old paper is always in the air.
