Out here at C-24 in the Kumbalgod Industrial Estate, things get moving pretty early. Being right off Mysore Road means we have to deal with the heavy truck traffic every single morning. Kaveri Seed Company Pvt. Ltd. has been based in this unit for a long time. The warehouse is a big, high-ceilinged space that smells like earth and dried grain. We spend a lot of time checking the bags and making sure everything is stored properly so it stays dry. It’s not the kind of job where you stay clean; there is always a bit of dust on our clothes by the end of the shift. We have a small office section partitioned off where the fans are always running to keep the heat away. The guys on the floor know exactly where everything is, even when we have thousands of bags stacked up. We don’t have a lot of visitors, mostly just delivery drivers and the occasional farmer stopping by to ask questions. We drink a lot of water because it gets stuffy inside during the summer months. There is a small tea stall just down the road where we go when we need a break from the noise of the industrial estate. It's a hardworking environment and we don't spend much time on fancy talk. We just focus on the seeds and getting them out to where they need to go. It’s practical work for practical people.
