K M Stores

K M Stores is located at 18/1 on the corner where Kempa Gowda Road meets T B Road. It’s a small general shop that has been around the neighborhood for many years now. We stock a bit of everything, from bars of soap and bottles of shampoo to large bags of rice and different kinds of lentils. The space inside is quite cramped because we try to fit so much onto the narrow shelves. You have to be very careful walking down the aisles so you don't accidentally knock anything over with your bag. I spend most of my day standing behind the old wooden counter, weighing out items on the scale or bagging things up for the neighbors. It's a local place, so we hear all the neighborhood news and gossip while people wait for their change. We don't have a fancy computer system or anything modern; we still write down most of our sales in a thick ledger book with a blue pen. The fan on the ceiling squeaks a bit when it's on high, but it helps keep the air moving during those hot afternoon hours. Sometimes deliveries arrive right in the middle of a busy time, and we have to stack the cardboard boxes on the sidewalk until we can clear some space inside the shop. It’s just me and a couple of others helping out with the work. We open up early and close quite late every evening.
