We are up on the second floor at No. 50, which is on 4th Cross in Audugodi. The stairs are a bit narrow and steep, so carrying rolls of fabric up can be a real workout. Audugodi is always buzzing with activity, so there is never a quiet moment outside. Inside, we have rows of sewing machines and long tables where we cut the cloth. There are always piles of t-shirts or trousers waiting to be packed into boxes. We spend a lot of time checking the stitching and making sure no buttons are loose. The lighting is bright because we need to see what we are doing, but it makes the room pretty warm in the summer. We have threads of every color imaginable hanging on the walls. Sometimes we run out of a specific shade and someone has to run out to the market to find it quickly. It’s not a polished corporate office. It’s a workshop. We have tea together in the afternoons and talk about how many pieces we finished that day. The radio is usually playing in the background to keep everyone moving. It’s a lot of repetitive work, but we take it one day at a time. We focus on getting the piles of clothes through the door and out to the customers who are waiting for them. It’s just how we do things here in our little corner of Audugodi.
