Field Fresh

You can find us over at the Vidyaranyapura Market Yard, specifically at spot number 555. Field Fresh is basically a place where produce comes in and goes out all day long. If you haven't been to a market yard, it’s a lot of shouting, heavy lifting, and the smell of fresh vegetables everywhere. We get started very early in the morning, usually while it is still dark outside, to receive the trucks coming in from the farms. Our space at 555 is mostly just a large open area with some scales and a lot of plastic crates stacked up. It’s a very hands-on job, and you end up with dirt under your fingernails by the end of the shift. We spend our time checking the quality of the greens and sorting through bags of onions or potatoes. The floor is usually a bit damp from the washing and the morning dew. We don’t have an office with air conditioning; we just have a small corner with a stool and a notebook to keep track of the weights. The market yard is a community of its own, and we know all the other vendors and the truck drivers who come through. It’s a lot of hard work and long hours on your feet, but it’s what we know. We don't try to make it sound like more than it is. We just move the food from the farmers to the people who need it in the city.
