Call Centre

We run this small operation out of Ashiana Apartments, which is right on Beltola Bazar Road in Guwahati. It’s located in 5A, under the care of S. Ajitsingh. It’s a bit of a tight squeeze sometimes with all the headsets and chairs, but we make it work. The road outside is always loud because of the bazar. You can hear the vegetable sellers and the traffic all day long. We basically just answer phones and handle calls for people who need help with various things. It’s a call centre, but not the kind you see in movies with thousands of people. We’re just a small group trying to stay on top of the ringing phones. Sometimes the power goes out in Assam, and we have to wait for the backup to kick in. It’s not a perfect job, but it pays the bills and keeps us busy. We started here because the rent was decent and it’s a central spot. Most of us live nearby, so the commute isn't too bad unless the rain is really heavy. We don't have a big fancy sign outside. You just have to know which apartment to go to. We spend most of our shifts talking to folks from all over, trying to figure out their problems. It’s repetitive, sure, but that’s the nature of this kind of work. We just keep at it day after day until the shift is done. It's simple.
