Chhaya Brick Field

Chhaya Brick Field is located on Fathepur Road in the Ramnagar area of Nawabganj Tehsil. We are quite easy to find because we are right near the Bank of India. Having the bank nearby is handy for when we need to handle the business side of things. The field itself is a large open space where we lay out the bricks to dry in the sun. It’s a seasonal job, so when the monsoon hits, things get very quiet and we have to wait for the ground to dry out. During the rest of the year, it’s a constant cycle of digging, molding, and firing. The air around Nawabganj is usually thick with the smell of the kiln when it's running. We have a simple hut that serves as our office where we keep track of the deliveries and who owes what. The workers here are local people who have been doing this for years. We don't use a lot of high-tech machinery; it’s mostly manual work that takes a lot of patience. Sometimes we have issues with the transport trucks getting stuck in the mud or the coal delivery being late. We just take it as it comes. People from around Ramnagar know they can come to us when they need a few thousand bricks for a project. It’s not a glamorous life, but it keeps us busy and we like being part of the local community here.
