Karnataka Human Rights Movement

Our office is over in Yeshwantpur on 2nd Main in B K Nagar. It’s a modest space where the Karnataka Human Rights Movement operates from. We don’t have much in the way of fancy furniture, just a few tables and chairs for meetings. There’s always someone coming in with a problem or some papers to file. It feels a bit lived-in, mostly because there’s a lot of activity throughout the week. We keep track of various cases and talk to people who feel they’ve been wronged. It’s not a quiet job, but it’s what we do here. The neighborhood is busy, so there’s always something going on outside our door. We aren’t some big international organization with a huge budget. We’re just local people trying to help out where we can. Sometimes the electricity goes out or the phones don't work right, but we keep going. The walls are covered with notices and calendars to keep us on track. It’s a bit of a squeeze when we have a full meeting, but we make it work. We’ve been in B K Nagar for quite some time now. People know us as the place to go when things aren't fair. It’s a basic office for basic work, nothing more and nothing less. We don't use big words or make grand speeches, we just sit down and listen to what people have to say about their troubles and try to document it. It can be tiring, but it’s the job we chose. Sometimes we stay late to finish up some files or wait for a phone call. We just try to be here when the door opens.
