Out here in Powayan, life revolves around what we can pull from the dirt. We started Whitebeans Agro Farm Producer Company Limited because individual farmers in Dalelpur were having a rough time dealing with the middle men alone. You can find us over at Vinod Kumar’s place in Shivnagar, which is basically the spot where we all sit down to figure out the week’s plan. The roads around Banda aren't the easiest for the trucks, especially when the monsoon hits and everything turns into a big muddy mess. We don't have some fancy office with glass walls or anything like that. It is just a few of us sitting on plastic chairs under the shade, talking about seed prices and who has a working tractor available for Tuesday. Some days the power goes out for hours and we just have to wait it out. It’s hard work, and my hands are usually stained with soil by noon, but that is just how it is. Vinod keeps the papers in a metal cupboard and we try our best to keep track of the accounts without making too many mistakes. We are just a group of neighbors from around the Shivnagar post area trying to make sure the crops get sold for a fair price so we can keep the lights on at home. It isn't glamorous, but the beans are growing well this year despite the heat and the bugs. We just take it one day at a time.
