Mehta Footwear Co. is situated over at Plot No. 669-70 in Phase-I of M.I.E. It’s a pretty large space because we need the room for all the materials and the benches where everyone sits. Most of the people here have been working with shoes their whole lives. It’s a craft that takes a lot of patience and focus. You won’t find many computers or high-tech gadgets in our main area. It’s mostly just hands, tools, and a lot of leather and rubber. The smell of the materials is something you get used to after the first week. We start early in the morning before it gets too hot. The M.I.E. area is always buzzing with activity, especially during the shipping hours. We have a small crew and we all know each other’s families. It feels more like a big workshop than a factory. We don't bother with fancy titles or big meetings. We just talk over tea in the mornings about what needs to get done for the day. Sometimes things go wrong, like a machine breaking down, and we all have to pitch in to fix it. It’s just the way things are done here. We’ve been at this address for a long time and the neighborhood has seen a lot of businesses come and go, but we’re still here at Plot No. 669-70 doing what we know best and keeping the workshop going every single day.
