Our place, Vashisth Uddyaan Caterers & Decorators, is located on Clive Road in Civil Lines. If you know where Sangam Place is, we are right in front of it. Being in Allahabad means we deal with a lot of big groups and traditional families. Most days involve us sorting through piles of tent cloths or checking the kitchen supplies. We do the catering and the decorations too. It gets really hot here in the summer, so setting up outdoor events is a tough job for the boys. We try to get the flowers fresh from the market early in the morning before the sun gets too high. Sometimes the trucks arrive late and we have to scramble to get everything ready before the guests show up. It’s a bit of a chaotic business, but we’ve gotten used to the rhythm of it over the years. My uncle started this, and now a few of us manage the daily stuff. We don't have a big corporate office; it's just our workspace at 3/7 Clive Road. People come by to talk about their menus or look at the different fabric colors we have for the stages. There’s always someone drinking tea and discussing dates for the next wedding season. It’s a practical way to earn a living, even if the hours are long and the work is physically demanding. We just focus on getting the food cooked and the lights hung up.
