Working inside Loha Bazar near Dhabi Gate means you get used to the sound of metal hitting metal pretty quickly. Our place, A-One Steel Industries, is right in the thick of it. It is a dusty part of town, but that is just the nature of the steel business. We have piles of inventory around and the smell of grease and iron is always in the air. Most of our day is spent moving stock or talking to buyers who come through the gate. It is a very traditional market area, so things have not changed much over the years. We are not big on fancy decorations; the office is just a corner where we keep the ledger and take a seat when our feet get tired. The tea seller comes by twice a day, which is usually the highlight of the afternoon for us. We deal with all sorts of steel pieces, and the work can get quite heavy and tiring. The trucks come in early to load up, so the mornings are usually our busiest time. Sometimes the traffic in the narrow lanes of the bazar makes it hard for deliveries to get through, but we manage somehow. It is a gritty job, and our hands are rarely clean by the end of the shift. We have been operating from this spot for a long time, and everyone around here knows us by name. It is honest work in a loud, busy environment where everyone stays busy.
